Re: Please send some good thoughts my way

Hi VictoryInTruth, I'm sorry to hear about your recent tragedies. Sometimes samsara just totally sucks. I hope you don't mind some Mahayana-flavored compassion right now! :) Teyata Om Bekandze Bekandze Mahabekandze Radza Samugate Soha http://www.tonglen.oceandrop.org/buddhapix/MedicineBuddha.jpg Try...

Re: Why did Buddha forbid certain types of meat?

In Burma, Beef is also not often eaten by monks, largely due to the influence of Venerable Ledi Sayādaw. Cow Dhamma It's not prohibited by the Vinaya rule, as long as it is free from the three defects, but the Suttanta clearly show the debt of gratitude owed to cows who provide milk, and labour to ...

Re: Why did Buddha forbid certain types of meat?

I think the Buddha disallowed any food that the culture of the times considered to be repulsive to eat.....the monks were after all representatives of the dhamma so the Buddha did not want them to do things considered to be repulsive by the people of the time. People were likely to not want to take...

Re: Why did Buddha forbid certain types of meat?

Cows were venerated in the Vedas, this is true. However, I think cows may have elevated to the much higher status at a later date. The brahmanism 'religion' (not Hinduism, but perhaps a precursor) engaged in animal sacrifices, which included cows and bulls. Ah, very interesting! Were any animals sa...

Re: Why did Buddha forbid certain types of meat?

I have read or heard two reasons: 2. They are considered "royal" / higher animals by custom and to adapt to the culture, the bhikkhu should not eat their flesh, even if it is offered. Weren't cows also "holy" and "royal" animals in ancient India? And if so, why didn't ...

Re: Where is this quote from?

Ah, thank you everyone! The quote which I found does seem to be written in a way which excites westerners' emotions more than the original quote which serve more to subdue emotions and lead to self-control (what the quote is talking about). I was looking for a powerful, exciting, authentic Shakyamun...

Where is this quote from?

I found this quote online which is attributed to Shakyamuni Buddha: "It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell." Did Buddha really say this? (There are lots of fake or ...

Re: What do Buddhists think of Jesus Christ?

Upon further reflection, I just see Jesus as a waste of time. There are still many Buddhist texts which I haven't read yet, and my time would be better spent focusing on those. I've never read the complete Nikayas, for example... However, being kind to Christians is not a waste of time because it's ...

Angkor Wat ruins on shaky ground

"The famous temple ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia are under the threat of being destroyed as a dwindling supply of water due to over-consumption weakens the nine-centuries-old structures' grounds. Aela Callan reports from Siem Reap, Cambodia on the problem that stems from a high demand for wat...

Re: What do Buddhists think of Jesus Christ?

Jesuslovesyou, I think your avatar pic looks cool, but do you really think the historical Jesus looked so white? If Jesus really existed, he was Jewish and probably had black hair and tan skin. He wasn't born in England. I would like to see some pictures of a very Jewish-looking, historically accura...
