Re: Why did the buddha waste his breath?

It seems much of the religious aspects of Buddhism are overlooked and not talked about as much as say meditation. Jhanas, magical powers, heaven and hell realms, rebirth. The majority of the attitude toward these things most of the time is to dismiss them, scoff at them, say they are useless, not r...

Would it not relate to self-view, Vincent?

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

Vincent Despite unceasing calls in the 2 other threads on you to put forth a comprehensible discourse explaining your thesis why the Aggregates cease ante-mortem for an Arahant, you have desisted. If you're going to sneak in again with this meme and hope it will go unnoticed, you are quite mistaken...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

All I can assume is that you don't believe in rebirth, otherwise obviously something has to be reborn, something that brings with it memories and even in the Buddha's case perhaps a certain personality of being that is similar in the previous lifetimes, or do you think he made up the whole thing. P...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

no Tilt I invited you first to quote a scripture where the buddha denied any essence going from one life to the next, as to my scriptural support I need only point to the Buddha's own recollection of his many past lives, obviously something went from one life to the next or there would be no memori...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

impossible to make any sense of, yet everyone believes in it, except me...... It is possible to make sense of it in terms of the Buddha's teachings. Nearly every religion has had people or sects who made sense of it... However! It's not that this discussion is entirely :offtopic:, but we should try...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

While the Buddha spoke extensively on the topic of what is not self, the skhandas, etc, I don't think he ever explicitly stated that there is no self of any kind whatsoever, Hmm, I was wondering then what the Buddha meant by this reply to the monks - Siyā nu kho, bhante, ajjhattaṃ asati paritassanā...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

The Buddha stated that a permanent unchanging self was a wrong view, but didn't he also state that the idea of there being no self was a wrong view also? The Buddha equates no self with annihilationism and there is a self with eternalism in this sutta http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn44...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

Perhaps middle way would be a better term than middle path, All throughout the Buddha's teaching we see him taking a middle way between extreme viewpoints, another obvious example the middle way between asceticism and hedonism. Clearly as I see it a subtle existence after parinibbana is not one ext...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

So, what are we to make of this? Does the atheist explanation seem to be a sort of vibhavatanha? Can we say that atheists seem to take nibbana for granted as something that happens in any case? Well I think the case of the 7th Jhana David brought up in his article may quite well invalida...

Re: Why has annihilationism proliferated Theravada so profus

I should ask my thread title to be changed to "a clear demonstration of why most of us here think we can frame Nibbana in terms of Non-existence, albeit in very tricky wordplay so as never to actually say it outright". I still find the suttas very opaque on this question, and clearly ther...
