Re: Should one try to convert non-Buddhists?

One of the happiest moments of my life was seeing a friend not only take a dharma book I'd arranged for free distribution, but lovingly annotate it. In Chinese Buddhist culture, these types of gifts are called "结缘" (something like "creating a kammic affinity"). They aren't just l...

vinaya question: attained states of disciples

I know it's a parajika for a bhikkhu/bhikkhuni to claim attained states for himself/herself falsely, but I had a question- is it also a parajika if one falsely claims attained states etc in someone else ? For example, if a teacher claims to know (and accepts the implication that this may be through ...

Re: theravada monastery! Please help!

I understand your situation completely: not every country has good conditions for workers, in some countries it's easier to save up and take time off than others. There is an international list here of organisations supporting Buddhist nuns: http://www.bhikkhuni.net/directory. It may be possible to ...

Re: good books for those wishing to become a monk

I'd like to make a slightly heterodox recommendation- read anything by Thomas Merton. He was a Catholic monk who encountered Buddhism later in life and felt a deep sense of connection with Buddhism. In particular, I'd recommend "The Wisdom of the Desert Fathers". While the monastic forms o...

Re: To those who have ordained or plan to ordain

To those who hope to or are planning to ordain: What is currently holding you back from ordaining? My degree (not long left now). I did try to become a monastery permanent resident at 18, but the stress affected my mother's health badly and I came back. How long have you been practicing Buddhism? 10...

Re: What if I can never pay off my debt?

Take care, Suttametta, take care, your life is valuable, and Mkoll is right to let you know that there are people who can listen, we all go through rough patches. And all things are impermanent- even debt. I want to show you one way in which your experiences are valuable- I want to use them ...

Re: cleanliness & hygeine in monasteries

Hi, There are two main sources of rules relating to cleanliness in monasteries: 1) the Vinaya, especially the Khandakas. http://archive.org/stream/BuddhistMonascitCode2/BuddhistMonasticCode2_djvu.txt 2) house-rules, designed to deal with specific problems of individual monasteries or traditions. The...

Re: Pali word association game

from the post before last: okkhittacakkhu- with downcast eyes e.g

"Okkhittacakkhu satimā, nāyaṃ nīcakulāmiva" (Pabbajjāsutta, Mahāvagga, Sutta Nipāta)

With eyes downcast (Okkhittacakkhu), the one with mindfulness(satimā), is not (nāyaṃ) like one from a low family (nīcakulāmiva).

Re: Buddhist Scripture use for Paper

:anjali: Hi Sean, I'm a fellow study of religion student. While Buddhists disagree on the respective importance of the numerous versions of the Buddhist Canon and its many commentaries, and the status of non-canonical texts, I'd be happy to help you out to the best of my ability if you send me a pri...
