Re: Soul theories and the Dhamma

A question - has anyone come across anywhere of the notion that the iddhipada are the (manifestation of the) self?

Re: Does pornography leads to rebirth in a lower realm?

Hi, this looks interesting. do you have a source (primary or secondary) that highlights these 10 unwholesome actions? Also, perhaps this is included in the 10 and just wasnt clear. but im pretty sure you are missing the 5th precept. Breaking the 5th precept can also lead to rebirth in the lower rea...

Re: Wanting as an ability

Sounds like depression. I would suggest things: 1) Practice meditation to learn how to focus on the breath while ignoring the automatic mind, not being lead by it and not being averse to it, just ignoring it and leaving it to function in the background of consciousness. Do regular practice - at leas...

Re: Does pornography leads to rebirth in a lower realm?

It doesn't. Only the dasa akusala kamma / ten unwholesome actions can lead to rebirth in lower realms. The ten are: Wrong bodily conduct: 1 Killing and violence: "being a killer of beings, bloody-handed, given to blows and violence, not having compassion". 2 Stealing: "taking what is ...

Sorry, you don't know what you are talking about.. And are lying about Leigh says there, as I have already pointed out here in the thread.

Re: Love and compassion is at the root of anger and hatred?

Yes, I thought that it covered anger as well, as it says about lamenting and beating his breast. The same situations would probably bring about anger - I would certainly be angry with myself if hateful heirs made off with my property, or I was splashed with boiling dung! Haha, yes, you are right. I...

Re: Love and compassion is at the root of anger and hatred?

Yes, sorry, appallingly expressed. I mean that the teacher is saying that our every action is caused by our constant seeking for happiness. This is certainly consistent with the passage in MN 13, which says that seeking sensual happiness results in all sorts of unpleasantness, presumably including ...

Re: Love and compassion is at the root of anger and hatred?

The closest texts I can think of are those which talk about the drawbacks of sensuality. People want to make themselves happy with sensual experiences, but their endeaours lead them into difficulties, including difficult emotions. ... (MN 13) This would not normally be expressed in terms of compass...

Re: Love and compassion is at the root of anger and hatred?

The history has to be sought in tibetan buddhism. I don't think you will find something like that in the suttas. I know AN 5.161 says that when we have aversion towards someone we can remove the annoyance by love or compassion (among other things), tho it doesn't specify how, and AN 5.162 specifies...

Love and compassion is at the root of anger and hatred?

I want to ask about this specific teaching, does anyone know it's history, where it was first given, by whom? Does it maybe have source in the Pali Suttas somewhere, or maybe something similar is said there?

Re: Theravada if it includes Buddhaghosa is schismatic

For those who critisize the Visuddhimagga as making its own version of jhāna/not following the Suttas (both false), you sure make your own version of jhāna—which has no basis in the Suttas... and is even contradictory. I don't know what you want to say, you're not making sense. What you've describe...

Re: Theravada if it includes Buddhaghosa is schismatic

Similarly to Leigh Brasington/Bhante Vimalaramsi, and along with your post a few pages back, of which you say you "need to instantly enter all the four jhānas (the first jhāna in 10-20 seconds at most) because you have a busy schedule"... When people make public claims of spiritual attain...

Abodes of beings

So, Buddha (in the Sattavasa Sutta) divides the 31 planes of existence into nine abodes, or levels: Level 1: Kama loka, beings "diverse in body and diverse in perception" Level 2: 1st jhana beings, which are "diverse in body and unified in perception" Level 3: 2nd jhana beings, w...

Re: In your view, understanding, Parinibbana is:

As far as understand it, some Vajrayana (and even some Mahayana) traditions interpret nibbana as liberating the mind from being trapped by suffering and negative emotions (anger, greed, etc) by getting it trained in what is basically vipassana way of experiencing things (in a detached way). This is ...
