Eating disorders and not eating after noon

Hello, I’d be interested to hear from anyone who is in recovery/recovered from an eating disorder how you manage retreats/staying at a monastery when you can’t eat in the afternoon? Do you simply avoid retreats altogether? Just for context for those who may be unsure, a huge part of relapse preventi...

anupaghato

I came across this word in a quote from Ajahn Lee regarding love for others but can’t find any other references to the word, its meanings and usage by the Buddha. Could anyone shed any light or point me in the right direction please?

Our relationship to entertainment as lay people

I’ve been considering for a while now the difficulty navigating my relationship with entertainment as a lay practitioner. On the one hand, the literary works of people such as Tolkien and movies such as Star Wars have enriched my life. Anyone familiar with the work of Jung or even Yuval Noah Harari ...

Relying on the suttas over modern monastics

Hi All, Inspired by a comment I saw in another thread, I’m interested to hear from those who rely solely on the suttas/sutta pitaka as opposed to Dhamma talks/books by modern monastics. Given the different interpretations of various teachings, how can one approach the suttas without a framework from...

Observance days - Midnight/4am vigils

Hi, I’m aware that some monasteries (especially here in the UK) have meditation vigils until either midnight or 4am on lunar observance days. I’m just curious as to what the schedules are usually like the following day, given that the rising bell is usually between 4:30 am - 5:00am, depending on the...

Phenomenological/existential approaches - starting point

I've been very intrigued by the Dhamma talks I've recently been listening to by Ven. Nyanamoli and Ajahn Hiriko. However, I don't have any sufficient grounding in the phenomenological and existential philosophies to grasp these approaches to the Dhamma so would appreciate some advice on a good start...

Re: How many calories a day for monks?

Actually only a small percentage do OMAD. I believe most monks do two meals a day, one in the morning and one at around noon. This is the case with the Ajahn Chah branch monasteries here in the UK. Few of the monks I’ve encountered here have been overweight or obese but the food choices are much be...

UK monasteries - nutrition

Hi, As has been discussed elsewhere, one of the contributing factors for poor health (including obesity) in the sangha is the nutritional quality of the food offered (low fibre, high GI etc.). How have those who have stayed at UK monasteries found the nutritional quality of the food offered? Observa...

Re: Which diet are you?

Vegan, mainly WFPB (whole-food plant-based). I also do intermittent fasting, eating only breakfast and lunch in a 5-6 hour window and then taking nothing but water (or the occasional herbal tea) for the remaining 18/19 hours.

Reconciling the origins of kamma/rebirth

Hi all, Given the importance of kamma/rebirth within the context of the path, how do people reconcile the origins of concepts such as kamma/rebirth coming from the Upanishads? As someone with a tendency towards skepticism/materialism but who has found a secular approach to Buddhism to be massively l...

Finding the balance

I'm curious about how to find the balance between striving for a healthy lifestyle (for longevity and disease prevention) versus not becoming obsessive and losing sight of impermanence? For example, I've significantly changed my diet over the last 18 months and have seen great health benefits but fi...

Pain and posture.

Hi all, When I meditate on a morning in my living room (on a zafu/cushion but no zabuton as I have carpet) I don't experience any pain. However, when meditating at my local monastery (on both a zafu and a zabuton) I experience pain in my upper back (shoulder blades) and collar bone area. I thought t...

Counsellors/Psychotherapists/Clinical Psychologists

Hi all, Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place. I'm curious, for any Theravadin practitioners who work as counsellors, psychotherapists or clinical psychologists: have you found your choice of therapeutic model(s) is influenced by the Dhamma? Do you practice a model in which the theory beh...
