Re: Fellas, may I lean on you?

The mountain simile comes to mind, with old age illness and death rolling in on us, better to live the spiritual life. As others have said you could try living the monastic life for a little while to see if it suits you, before committing yourself. That's what I'd like to do myself in the near futur...

Re: Is Tomas de Torquemada burning in kammic hell?

He surely thought they were, as did his fellow Catholics. In the same way that, for example, the Europeans who colonized the Americas thought that their intentions were righteous, and that there was nothing wrong with taking the land and natural resources from the natives and even kill them. In the...

Re: Is Tomas de Torquemada burning in kammic hell?

Torquemada was an inquisitor who burned and murdered heretics if I'm correct?

His intention was to torture people and make them suffer, before taking their lives.

So it seems to me, for sure he gets evil kamma for that.

Not sure why you say his intentions were 'righteous?'

Re: Killing Rats

Release rats within 100 yards of where they were caught. Releasing a rat into a strange area will almost surely result in his or her death. PETA Killing is much less likely to carry a risk of causing suffering than release in an unfamiliar area, Guiding principles in the Humane Control of Rats and ...

Re: Is there consciousness in Nibbana?

It seems to me that the fire has ceased to exist. It is annihilated, kaput and gone for good. The fuel is spent, and the fire ceases to exist. So a baby who grew up too is kaput and gone for good? Is that annihilation? What about when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly? No those wouldn't be annih...

Re: Just The Buddha?

Although there is a lot of misinformation and downright made-up facts, there has been a lot of research on the paranormal. I don't think it is as far-fetched as is usually believed. It is not the same as in movies, but definitely not normal. Also, with 200 billion galaxies (give or take), there is ...

Re: The Slick Secret Behind a “Stimulus Package”

I don't think the proprietor is $100 out of pocket, because he no longer owes that amount to the butcher, he's paid the debt off. Maybe I'm missing something... where's the catch to this. Edit: I see, the $100 that the hotel owner used to clear his debt, was in fact owed to him by the prostitute, so...

Re: Thich Nhat Hanh & Herman Hesse

Hi Jhana4 I read that book recently, and it would be difficult to give a review without filling 2 or 3 pages :) I'll instead try to answer your questions. It's a work of fiction, and I may be wrong, but I doubt that Hesse was enlightened, so it's not Buddhism. Why is Buddhism happier? In the book th...

Q re kamma as action versus effect

Hi guys I have a question about kamma, and let me first say I know it's a complicated subject, and I admit I know little about it. I believe that kamma means action. So, am I right in thinking, any action I make, has an equal reaction in response. If I insult someone, I will be insulted back, is tha...

Re: The obligatory Dhamma themed movie thread

I'd add the movie "Revolver" to the list.

It's very violent in parts, but the main theme of the movie is the ego, and conquering it.

At least that was my understanding of it; it's quite a weird movie.

Very cool I like this.. as an uncle I'm inclined to recall how some kids, when they first learn of what meat is, are less inclined to want to eat it.

Re: Do you watch tv?

I watch very little TV but do sometimes watch a movie; I've a fairly large DVD collection. Practically the only television I watch is sports programmes - I'm not interested in all the sex, violence and rhetoric shown on many movies & TV shows.
