Re: Thanissaro's view of nibbana
I feel it is appropriate to share this since the following was taken from a recent talk (link provided) that has taken place after this post was made. Bhikkhu Thanissaro - The Thai Forest Master’s - Part 1 http://www.audiodharma.org/talks/audio_player/5995.html Quote Start ~49m10s Q: You mentioned s...

Modern Spirituality & Heedfulness
Hey forum! I'm a part of various groups quietly watching the growing sense of spirituality here in the States. As well, generally study various traditions. With all that said, one of the greatest elements that are missing from all of these is rarely a sense of heedfulness is ever encouraged. Especia...

Re: What I'd change if I could repeat my first year meditati
Passive or disengaged mindfulness (which is commonly taught). Bhikkhu Thanissaro's dhamma talks assisted in correcting that for me.

Re: Meditation Retreat / Refuges (USA Based)
I have not been to IMC but I know people who have. I've heard from those who have done retreats there that they are worthwhile. I'm not interested because I think their prices, which only cover accommodations, are high; it is clearly implied that an additional donation (which they call dana) is exp...

Re: Meditation Retreat / Refuges (USA Based)
Where are you located? You may be able to find one near you, that is also not too costly: http://www.buddhanet.info/wbd/country.php?country_id=2 I live in Indiana. Aside from the western side of the states my traveling is not extremely limited. Do the links they provide clear on retreats / stays? T...

Meditation Retreat / Refuges (USA Based)
Good morning Dhamma friends! I have been investigating the Insight Meditation Center in Massachusetts (cofounded by Joseph Goldstein). I have not committed to this one, but I was curious if anyone had any experience with this specific location (refuge or retreat) and if they were willing to share th...

Please see The Five Greatest Rarities , The Simile of the Birds , and The Simile of the Millionaire by Venerable Ledi Sayādaw. Thank you, Bhante! I read each of them carefully. I particularly found "The Five Great Rarities" very encouraging. Please look for a PM from me. Kind regards, Zen

Re: Mindfulness in daily life: 'Best practices'
Great thread! For myself, I keep it simple. For this I borrow ideas from my entrance into Buddhism which was through Mahayana (Ew!!! I know right! *sarcasm disclaimer*), which taught me being present post meditation. The simple example a learned from and found relatable was when my teacher said &quo...

Practicing Dhamma Into the Next Life?
Good afternoon! I know that not all here subscribe to the idea of literal rebirth, and that is ok, but for those who do how can a very diligent practitioner who fails to realize liberation in this life be confident that in the next life that the practice will be continued? Is it theorized that the c...

Re: Looking for conversation on arousing energy
In "Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English" it states that applied thought (striking the meditation object) helps overcome the hindrance of sloth and stupor. Essentially that means, IMHO, continuously returning to the breath (as an example) after applying mindfulness both of the sloth and mis...

Re: "Looking" Within
I had to smile when I read your post. I was at a teaching one time, and asked this very question. The translator translated for the teacher, and they shared some back and forth in the other language, and then both laughed heartily. The translator then replied to me, "The teacher says, 'You mus...

Re: "Looking" Within
Hi Zen If you are familiar with 17 thought moments you will have a clear understanding of this. The way I understand, It is that the second thought process is evaluating the first thought process. :) See mind is in active and passive form in: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/mendis/wheel3...

Re: "Looking" Within
Hi, I'd say, yes, it is the mind looking at itself. When the 5 external senses shut down in meditation, that becomes quite clear. Then again the mind is no "thing", so it is just a process looking at itself. The dhamma eye is a metaphor for seeing the dhamma, understanding the dhamma. It ...

"Looking" Within
Good afternoon forum, In my practice the question has occurred regarding an "inner eye" looking upon itself. What is the unenlightened eye that looks upon the dhamma within, i.e. the activity related to dependent origination? This may be a elementary question, but is it the mind observing ...
