Re: Sankhara and craving/aversion

My question is, does craving/aversion fall into this category as well? It seems that craving and aversion are driving forces which lead towards actions and experiences. Another thing that might fit into this category might be Anusaya, or underlying tendencies. I'm not really sure. The word Sankhara...

Re: examples of benefits in not translating 'dhamma' into its various nuances

"...when English translators give 'dhamma' various fine nuanced differing translations for the many contexts (more than 10), it makes the individual sutta more comprehendible when viewed in isolation, but it makes it difficult for the reader to connect the dots between the various suttas,"...

Re: Digital Pali Reader and Windows 11

Are you downloading from here? https://sourceforge.net/projects/digitalpali/ That looks to be more than 7 years old. Now the DPR is a web app. https://www.digitalpalireader.online There is an option to save it for offline use. Yes, that's where I downloaded it from. Thank you so much for the link t...

Digital Pali Reader and Windows 11

My old computer fried, new computer came with Windows 11 installed, now the DPR isn't working very well. The appearance has changed, which is odd (menus on the right instead of left), text search doesn't work anymore, and there are no Preferences offered. Not sure if it's Windows, the newest version...

Re: 5A is a misinterpreted reformulation of DO

That process of being "caught up there, tied up there" is closely related to the bhava nidana... it's there where a "being" or "existence" is established. It's at jati, that the identification of being as something takes place. If bhava is "being", jati is &q...

Re: 5A is a misinterpreted reformulation of DO

i.e. the arahant is still percepient somehow, perhaps to a more purified degree idk. there were some suttas about this in the 30-44 books of SN i forgot which, where people ask sariputta or the buddha if the arahant is still percepient then what is he percient of It seems to me that, yes, the Buddh...

For one thus-arriving, form disappears— for objectification-classifications have their cause in perception .” What do you take "form disappearing" to mean here? Is it the perception of form which disappears, and if so, what does this mean, practically speaking? [/quote] My perception of t...

Re: Ven Analyayo on Dependent Origination

The interesting interpretation he give is that the early links are related to Vedic creation myth, so would give a sense of familiarity to the audience, but then instead of the creation of the world, DO leads to creation of dukkha... Re: Karma and Intent Stated in multiple places and ways?

The other verse I have seen in this regard is the 1st verse of damma pada to the effect that all in this world are mind made and happiness follows good mind and bad mind is followed by dukka . Samma sankappa sutta and cundakammaraputta sutta etc. explain that good and skilled intentions are followe...

Karma and Intent Stated in multiple places and ways?

cetanāhaṃ, bhikkhave, kammaṃ vadāmi. "Intention, I tell you, is kamma." --Thanissaro Bhikkhu's translation of a line in AN 6.63 "Penetrative" I've often heard it said that kamma is intentional action. I was just wondering if anyone is aware of any other suttas where the Buddha s...

Re: Cultural mindset of early Buddhists

I'm interested in better understanding the cultural mindset of the typical "Jambudipan" the Buddha taught. I realize I'm years late in answering, but in case anyone else reads this thread and is looking for sources, or katavedi is still following that line of thought, Brian K. Smith's Ref...

Re: What is Vibhava Tanha?

Srilankaputra: Thanks for that. It is an unusual take on it, isn't it. I think I will spend a little time working on translating it (still a beginner, takes me a while!). Will get back with y'all after I've done that, and keep checking this thread in the meantime.

Re: What is Vibhava Tanha?

Has anyone found a sutta that supports the common definition of vibhavatanha as a craving for extermination or non-existence? I've been looking and not found one but y'all as a group have read far more suttas than I have.

Re: the great rebirth debate

Hello all, check out AN6.62 (8) Knowledge sutta. The Buddha clearly states that what he said about rebirth ( in this case about Devadatta ) was true and not "figurative". Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Venerable Ananda and said to him: "Friend Ananda, was it after full conside...
