Re: 16 Stages of insight?

There is, however, an emphasis on one out of them clearly discernible in the progression of insight They are OK as a rough sketch. I think such sketches tend to downplay the fact that in both the Mahasi and Goenka practices quite a lot of concentration is developed by the practice (abdominal rising...

Re: 16 Stages of insight?

See Bhikku Analayo's "The Dynamics of Theravāda Insight Meditation" for his comparative analysis of the insight knowledge schemes found in the Paṭisambhidāmagga, Visuddhimagga, and the Vimuktimarga.

Re: The right Right View

Is transformation really dependant on (intellectually) understanding all the subtle concepts of doctrine? Considering that people who successfully attained the path during the time of the Buddha included beggars and slaves who probably had little to no training in logical thinking or analysis, I su...

Re: Sexual misconduct and prostitute

... It's interesting to me, as well, that the Vinaya rules regarding monks and alcohol use and sexual activity were developed after the Sangha had formed, long after the Buddha rose up from his seat at the Bodhi tree. As I recall (imperfectly), the rule against consuming alcohol was instituted afte...

Re: Sexual misconduct and prostitute

So now you're saying sex with your wife is an unwholesome act not encouraged by Buddhism??? Of course. “Householder, suppose a dog, overcome by hunger and weakness, was waiting by a butcher’s shop. Then a skilled butcher or his apprentice would toss the dog a well hacked, clean hacked skeleton of m...

Re: Possibility of Stream Entry

In this discussion between Sam Harris and Joseph Goldstein, Joseph talks about an experience which he had (around the 6 minute mark), which could very well be stream entry. He doesn't claim it to be stream entry, but simply describes it as the "experience of zero" and later in the discussi...

Re: Sexual misconduct and prostitute

As for prostitution, I really don’t understand why so many western Buddhists have this idée fixe about there being something inordinately evil in a man’s paying a woman to have sex with him. That's rooted deep down in the history of christian marriage in Europe since the middle ages. I think this m...

Re: Sexual misconduct and prostitute

This blog post by Bhikkhu Sujāto provides some discussion on the third precept: Interpretation of the third Precept pericope Ven. Dhammanando's reading of the precepts regarding prostitution seem to be pretty standard to me. A lay man/woman not in a committed relationship is not breaking the precept...

steve19800 wrote:Prostitution existed in Buddha's time but is there any reason why it is not included in the list of 'prohibited' person?
Perhaps because whether it's sexual misconduct or not would depend on the person sleeping with the prostitute? (e.g. a married person vs. an unmarried person.)

Re: watching rise and fall

Why must we assume that the hindrances need to be addressed in the exact same manner every time? If the hindrances are strong, then that means concentration is weak. When concentration is weak it is difficult to maintain mindfulness, so you can instead seek to eradicate the hindrance. Once concentra...

Bhikkhus, in the past, there was a Teacher called Sunetta, one free of greed who helped to cross the ford. The Teacher Sunetta had innumerable hundreds of disciples .Bhikkhus, this Teacher taught, to be born in the world of Brahma. Those who completely knew the dispensation of Sunetta, after death,...

Re: A Review of Ven. Ñānavīra's "Notes on Dhamma"

Of course much of Ven. Ñanavira's credibility depends upon how much one accepts phenomenology as a way of interpreting experience. Over the decades it has become more than just a philosophy and has come to influence a wide range of disciplines in the human sciences. One thing to keep in mind is tha...
