Re: Is the mind permanent?

I thought so! the video just confused me as all because he said the mind is separate from the body but I now realize he was simply explaining the continuation of mind and not that it is permanent.

Is the mind permanent?

I was watching a video of a monk explaining shutting off the five senses during deep meditation and just experiencing the mind. He said the mind is separate from the body and is something that continues (4:00-5:00 in video). Is the mind permanent? because if it is rebirth would be easier to understa...

Re: Gravity and Impermanence?

That didn't answer my question but perhaps I should have rephrased my statement of impermanence. Also could you explain what my "misunderstanding" is instead of sending me a link to a forum to dig through? Sorry; the link is to this forum, where a very similar question was asked already. ...

Gravity and Impermanence?

I have a philosophy club at my school and in today's meeting I said that almost everything is impermanent. One person disagreed saying that the law of gravity is permanent it was always here and always will be. I said gravity is dependent on mass therefore it is not a permanent self sustaining force...

Teachers?

Did any of you look for a teacher of some sort? and is it required to have a teacher? can I practice without one? because I don't know of any Theravadan teachers around where I live.

Re: What or who receives kamma's results?

The word "You" is being used in a purely conventional sense, and not in an ultimate sense. We need to use conventional terms in speech because there are only four things that are part of ultimate reality, and they are: Rupa, Citta, Cetasika, and Nibbana. If we didn't use conventional term...

Re: What or who receives kamma's results?

If the "self" is an illusion what receives the results of kamma? all the best, -Nick Consciousnesses do arise in the context of self (consciousness "I", consciousness "me", consciousness "mine").That isn't an illusion isn't it? So consciousnesses may reap wha...

Re: What or who receives kamma's results?

If the "self" is an illusion what receives the results of kamma? all the best, -Nick I think that there is some confusion here about what the teaching of Anatta actually means. A lot of people think it means "I don't exist" but that's not quite right. It means something more alo...

Re: What or who receives kamma's results?

what is "who" if "self" is an illusion? The question "what is 'who'" is not valid since no 'somebody' was mentioned before (just a who-statement that the Buddha rejected, providing an alternative). Please read the link above carefully friend. :anjali: Read it wrong. My...

Re: What or who receives kamma's results?

Looking for a "what" is just the same as if you were to say that a self receives the results. Although you have removed the idea of self, the mind continues to force some concept to be the receiver. Why? Because logic says there is supposed to be an answer to that question. The way I unde...

Buddhism and apathy?

One of my friends studies Buddhism for a world religions class he is taking, and when we were conversing he mentioned Buddhism often pointed to signs of apathy ( lack of feeling or emotion/lack of interest or concern) I said this is not always the case since Buddhism often advocates the virtues of c...
