Re: Buddho
I use Buddho sometimes if my mind is particularly unfocused. The issue I have is that the instructions tend to state "repeat untill no longer needed". I will use Buddho until the attention seems fixed on the breath but then when I drop it I go back to square one. Does anyone with a bit mo...

Re: Webu Sayadaw - Never slept?
It is highly unlikely that he never slept. The sitter's practice entails not lying down. The practitioner can sleep sitting up. Taung Pulu Sayādaw also practised this discipline for many years. He seemed to follow the easier level of practice by using a reclining arm-chair. From another topic: Webu...

Webu Sayadaw - Never slept?
I was reading about Webu Sayadaw, and in his book The Way to Ultimate Calm , he talks about the Sitter's practice and it seemed like he encouraged sitting meditation instead of sleeping. And on websites such as http://www.pariyatti.org/Resources/Treasures/VenWebuSayadaw/tabid/81/Default.aspx" o...

Re: Possible disadvantages of counting
Here's some information on breath counting in the Visuddhimagga... 190. 1. Herein, this clansman who is a beginner should first give attention to this meditation subject by counting. And when counting, he should not stop short of five or go beyond ten or make any break in the series. By stopping sho...

Re: Buddho
I'd just like to share my experience... Over the years, I've experimented with using "buddho", "in" and "out", and counting the breaths from "1... 10" as mental repetitions. What I found is that mentally repeating "buddho" doesn't feel nearly as smoo...

Re: How would you start again
That's a good question.
Until I started vipassana meditation as taught by Mahasi Sayadaw, my practice has always been patchy.

Something "important" about the Mahasi Method?
Hi fellow dharma bros and sis, I'm writing this because I'd like to know if anyone can help or relate to my experience with the Mahasi Sayadaw method (focus on noting). I've been practising daily for a few weeks now, and here's what I'm experiencing: It's calming and beneficial so far, but I feel li...

Re: Buddho Mantra
Here's a rare teaching by Ajahn Sao, the teacher of Ajahn Mun, on the topic of Buddho meditation... In our day and age, the practice of going into the forest to meditate and follow the ascetic dhutanga practices began with Phra Ajaan Sao Kantasilo, the teacher of Phra Ajaan Mun and, by extension, Ph...

Re: Counting the Breaths (Help)
Hey guys, Thanks for the helpful comments so far. My meditation is going along just fine. And I just want to add one thing that may be helpful to meditators... I used to start my meditation immediately counting/observing the breath, but now I always start off contemplating and reflecting on the four...

Re: Counting the Breaths (Help)
I'm wondering if one counts the breath... "one... two... three... ten" instead of using "Buddho", does this serve the same purpose? Mostly, yes. The word "Buddho" also means "Awake" which can also serve as a reminder to contemplate with the practice, but the ...

Counting the Breaths (Help)
In The Path To Arahantship by Ajahn Maha Boowa, he talks about how at the beginning of his meditation, he would repeat with mindfulness "Buddho" from the time he wakes up in the morning until the time he went to sleep, day after day. And he said this laid a solid foundation for his practic...

Re: Death Meditation (Help)
This sort of meditation is best practiced under the guidance of a qualified teacher. I recommend seeking one out if at all possible. :anjali: I wish I had found one, who I find myself completely trusting of, but the time is not yet I guess, or I'm just not trying hard enough :sage: Ven analayo desc...

Re: Death Meditation (Help)
Thank you all for sharing your insights into this... Reflect on the fact of it daily, not in the abstract but in a personal way: this very body will die. When it's useful, in my experience, is when this effort shepherds motivation into play, both for perpetual presence of mind as well as for renunci...

Death Meditation (Help)
Hi friends, How does one do meditation on death? Are there any instructions on this in the suttas? What have you found to be most effective regarding meditation on death? I ask these questions because I'm looking to start spending more time on this again. I remember many years ago when I first learn...

Wat Pa Baan Taad? Help...
Hi friends, As a keen follower of Ajahn Maha Boowa and his teachings, I would like to make a trip to Wat Pa Baan Taad. Does anyone know if the place conducts meditation retreats or things like that? Are they open to foreigners (I'm from Singapore) for meditation lessons/guidance/retreats? Has anyone...
