Re: Bhikkuni rules

Wow thank you all. I think I remember there was a sutta where the Buddha said Ananda that bhikkuni will spoil the dhamma like a disease spreading to rice plants or something.

Also please tell me what sutta the buddha said Bhikkuni have the potential to destroy the religion.

Re: This quote on consciousness

The comparison seems off, since there is no consciousness "out there" in a mystical broadcast studio, sending signals to the radio-brain. Yea I agree. But there is no need to go to that extent of detail. Just focus only on the radio, without extending the analogy to the broadcast studio. ...

This quote on consciousness

Looking for consciousness in the brain is like looking inside a radio for the announcer
I just saw this on the Web. I feel there is an element of truth in it. Isn't consciousness just a product of senses functioning rather than a real entity on its own?

Re: Is intentionally causing pain always akusala?

If the intention to cause pain is to teach a student something, then it cannot be an ill intention. I don't see how it is akusala

Re: Political involvement of the Sangha

This is why I think that activism is to be avoided in Buddhism. Even that type of activism taught by Tich Nat Hahn back in the 1960s. I know this is very controversial, but The Individual Practice has to be our focus, not trying to change the world (others). In my estimation the whole Bodhisattvah ...

Re: Training to get rid of the you?

“Looking at a visible object, a meditator just sees it and just feels that he sees it, without conceptualising it. With this, suffering ceases. One who practises in this way is said to be near to nibbāna.” Isn't nibbana supposed to be arising with wisdom and direct experience rather than bare aware...

Re: Political involvement of the Sangha

What on earth is happening to Asian Buddhist regions which were once living in peace with other races and religions is beyond me.

Yes I think I agree with you on that

Re: Political involvement of the Sangha

Okay so speaking out against injustice is fine. But what exactly is injustice? Isn't "justice" :quote: a highly personalized view? I don't think most political activities in society are black and white so that the side a person has to take is clear. When you are on this side, it may seem l...

Re: Political involvement of the Sangha

I think idle gossip about politics is quite different from speaking out against wrong-doings.. Would this be considered political action? http://www.irrawaddy.org/archives/29133 Exactly my question. Is it proper (or restricted by vinaya) for a monk to be involved with matters of the lay life such a...

Political involvement of the Sangha

Hi folks, are there statements in sangha vinaya which say that monks should not be politically involved in lay life matters?

Thanks

Re: Religious Harmony

All the more respect to the Buddha's wisdom when He taught not to cling to those "jungles" or "thickets" of view. This is the true message of religious harmony. One could preach messages of harmony all they want, and if at the end of the day, one still clings to the idea of my G...

Re: Religious Harmony

Yea but are there records of major blood baths and civil conflicts on religious disputes such as the jews and hitler/Israeli–Palestinian/Hindu-Muslim in India to name a few? I haven't heard of any. Edit: What I meant to say was that, if there were above Buddha might have commented on it. It looks li...
