Re: When is it ok to lie?

I have to correct myself, at the start of the thread I offered my opinion on the kammic effects: "Playing the fundamentalist again? Helping the Nazis? Dear Zom, wake up, don't compare yourself with Buddha and Arahants. You aren't one and neither am I. We don't have the same capabilities as them...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

Calling someone fundamentalist for pointing out the teachings on akusala kamma seems to me to be misguided. :anjali: Mike It would, but it was not on account of the teachings on akusala kamma that I used the word "fundamentalist" - did I? Then please show me where I did so. You seemed to ...

"Bhikkhus, whatever I have not objected to, saying, 'This is not allowable,' if it fits in with what is not allowable, if it goes against what is allowable, that is not allowable for you. "Whatever I have not objected to, saying, 'This is not allowable,' if it fits in with what is allowab...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

Yes the latter but I would be willing to attempt to eat a huge pile of crap to save a fellow human being. Well that is your imperative. I on the other hand know it wouldn't be worth it in the long run. :jumping: same goes for lying. It wouldn't be worth it for you - that's what we call an ...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

The venerable bhikkhu Bodhi about the hypothetical Nazi case: "(3) If I rightly understand Ven. Thanissaro’s position in regard to the hypothetical case of the German couple who are sheltering the Jewish family, he is saying that from the standpoint of the Dhamma, the couple, when questioned by...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

"As long as they live, the arahants abandon and abstain from false speech. They speak truth, adhere to truth. They are trustworthy and reliable, no deceivers of the world. Today, for this night and day, I too shall abandon and abstain from false speech. I shall be a speaker of truth, an adhere...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

Zom, again, you're not a Buddha. Don't compare yourself with one. Maybe a living Buddha could have stopped Hitler, who knows? The Buddha is our example, but we should not equate us to him. It would be as silly as muslims or christians equating themselves to god. Lay people even should not equate th...

Re: Buddhism and fallacies of idol worship

(II) As dhammacoustic and I have pointed out, this critique is coming from a group of people who bow down to a black rock five times a day, even if said rock is thousands of miles away. If you ask me, people who worship a black stone have no right to say anything about idol worship! So even the aut...

Yes...I think you're actually right about something. :namaste: No, he isn't. This is definitely not a fundamentalist site. There are fundamentalist members, but don't let you be chased away by them. Read Bhante Dhammanando's point of view earlier in the thread. Topics like these and others are mora...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

Some Buddhists teach that you never lie no matter what. To me, sometimes by lying you can actually generate good karma( that's only my personal opinion). Lying is just an unwholesome action, no matter what the circumstances are. Buddha never lies. Arahants never lie. If something is not to be said,...

Re: When is it ok to lie?

Always try to follow religious rules as good as you can, but never be a fundamentalist who is out of touch with reality. Not really an answer to your question, but (about telling lies in a broader sense) this might interest you nevertheless: [1] In the case of words that the Tathagata knows to be un...

Re: euthanasia

Witholding water? Most people die within 3 days from not drinking water. What better way can you ask for, you say.... really?!!!! If you don't feel live living unbearable pain with no chances of recovery, you stop consuming water and you die within a few days. No one kills anyone and it's not suici...

The internet is full of sites like http://www.answering-christianity.com/ac.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (by muslims) and http://answering-islam.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and so on, and so on... sometimes Buddhism is attacked, too, ...
