Re: Women, Buddhism, Meditation & The Internet

Oh my, a thread on Women Buddhists and the internet, how can I resist :D First of all, I am female so I feel qualified in stating why I am at DW (and quite happily so, still) but not overly active: I appreciate forums for information and to broaden my horizon, so to speak. I might ask a practical qu...

Re: Cat food

kamma is driven by intention. ...You intention is to feed a beloved pet whose species has evolved digestive anatomy to be carnivorous and who does not have the mental capacity for a dialogue about choosing an alternative food. Indeed. And not only the mental capacity for dialogue is missing, but al...

Re: Is alcohol allowable in certain cases?

I really wonder how much Christian puritanism is involved in interpreting this precept?
I mean do our Asian posters here from a Buddhist cultural background interprete it with the same level of strictness or lenience as Western converts?

Re: No One Was Ever Enlightened/Unenlightened By Lunch.

Well, I don't feel I am sitting on a high horse for being vegetarian neither do I even consider telling others what they should or shouldn't eat. Each to his (her) own, imo.

Re: Domestication of animals

Very cute, Anna! I am afraid not all of my cats would be as wise, but by and large, there is only 1-2 two "killers" amongst them. Usually, they just eat the meat I provide for them. which again goes back to the fact that obviously I have to by meat so I am part of the consumption chain tha...

Re: Australian Brahmic Buddhism

I have to admit that I am still not getting it. What I seem to understand is that there is a scholastic argument about who takes what scriptures into account on what basis. Fair enough, it appears to me, to take different stances on that. Then it moves into labelling these differing stances. Ok, to ...

He has gone from class clown ( which was tedious enough ) to renegade. Well, either that is surely a matter of opinion :stirthepot: And it begs the question "renegade" regarding what? A specific branch of a specific tradition, a tradition, a culture, a school, ... And no, I haven't notice...

Re: Why is there so much disagreement?

Funny, Mike, I had been wondering about this point earlier on before I noticed your thread :) I had come to the following conclusion: Most participants in those "debates" appear to be Westerners (my impression, but ofc might be wrong) who are essentially raised on conceptualization which a...

I cannot comment on the other points (apart from that I haven't heard any dismissive comment from him on the pali cannon so far), but my personal understanding of his meditation approach seems to differ concerning the following point: .... - The notion that the jhanas don't invlove any physical perc...
