Re: Appicchatā ca mettā ca karuṇā ca. ete santimagga

Appicchatā ca mettā ca karuṇā ca. ete santimagga "Contentment, loving-kindness and compassion. These are the path to peace" Is my grammar correct? Since the nouns in the first clause are feminine, the demonstrative should be etā . And in the second clause I think you'd be better served by...

Re: What is scanning? What is the Pali word?

The relevant words are pariggahaṇa for the act of scanning and pariggāhikā for the person who does it. Both are found in the commentary to the section on vedanānupassanā in the Satipaṭṭhānasutta. However, "scanning" is not really a translation as such, but rather an interpretation and appl...

Re: Fasting for uposatha...

Sorry, i don’t want to be rude. But unfortunately, none of the discussion has been cleared why the need for fasting. I think it was actually cleared up on Sunday, when Frank kindly posted a link to a page on his blog, on which all or most of the sutta passages relevant to bhojane mataññutā are conv...

Sabbadhammaabhinivesalakkhaṇā anattasaññā, tassā dhammasaññā padaṭṭhānaṁ. “Perception of not-self has the characteristic of non-insistence in the case of all ideas; its footing is perception of ideas.” I would translate it quite differently from Ñānamoli, taking the opening word as ablative and as ...

Re: Bodhisatta Path

Do Mahayana Bodhisattvas think helping people attain is fun? Mahayana texts that exhort people to undertake bodhisattvaship give much the same reasons as those which we find in the chapter on Great Compassion in the Paṭisambhidāmagga or in Dhammapāla's Treatise on the Paramīs . None that I've seen ...

Re: Fasting for uposatha...

IOW, there is some standard, some criterion implied when certain items are called "allowed". What is that standard, that criterion? The standard is that the Buddha declared them to be so. Occasionally the Vinaya describes his thinking: At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the...

Re: Bodhisatta Path

From what i understand for a Mahayana aspirant to be a Bodhisattva , to begin on the path as an initiate most important requirement would be to generate the Bodhicitta . However , in order to generate Bodhicitta one need to develop The Four Divine Dwellings of Brahmas (cattāri brahmavihārā) as its ...

Re: Why does Vasavatti not stop Mara?

I think the answer to question 2 is: through the air, abiding in glory, feeding on joy … That's what Ābhassara brahmās do. Susukhaṃ vata jīvāma, yesaṃ no natthi kiñcanaṃ; Pītibhakkhā bhavissāma, devā ābhassarā yathā. How happily, here, do we daily disport! Possessionless, we, the owners of nought. ...

How is it possible that Mahayana texts make it sound easy to embark upon but in actuality rather it is super duper very hard . 😁 If I wish to become a Bodhisattva... Will I need to be a male human? Re: Why does Vasavatti not stop Mara?

Only thing i can think of is (assuming paranimmitavasavatti heaven is a flat circle as i imagine). Mara's territory is on the edge of paranimmitavasavatti heaven. And being a paranimmitavasavatti deva, mara and his followers had thier retinue create a barrier for the portions of the heaven that wer...

Re: Bodhisatta Path

And Theravādins, presumably, would retort that they're just telling it as it is, while the Mahāyānists are trying to sugarcoat things. The concept of bodhisatta and its path can be found in the suttas , actually that is the instigator of Mahayana path . It seems we can sees that sugarcoating things...

Re: Bodhisatta Path

The Theravāda texts are aimed at diverting people from becoming bodhisattvas. The mahayānā texts are aimed at promoting it. And Theravādins, presumably, would retort that they're just telling it as it is, while the Mahāyānists are trying to sugarcoat things. But both sectarian boasts are irrelevant...
