Re: Anatta - a hindrance?
It seems that the Pali Canon does consider Anatta to be a hindrance. SN 22.46 Impermanent (2) pg 885 At Savatthi. “Bhikkhus, form is impermanent…. Feeling is impermanent…. Preception is impermanent…. Volitional formations are impermanent…. Consciousness is impermanent. What is Impermanent is sufferi...

Re: The citta as a permanent self?
The Dhamma of a pure citta is like this: The citta is the Dhamma, the Dhamma is the citta. We call it a citta only as long as it is still with the body and the khandhas. Only then can we call it a pure citta, the citta of a Buddha, or he citta of an Arahant, after it passes from the body and khandh...

Re: Advaitin vs. Buddhist takes on awareness/reality

I did support the claim did you not even read what I posted???you might not know the name of all the Buddha nature sutras(Tathagatagarbha) what i highlighted in BLUE is the main Tathagatagarbha sutra so I have suppor...

Re: On Thanissaro Bhikkhu's anatta teachings
Yes, it does and it leads to suffering not to the end of suffering. SN 22.59 "Form, O monks, is not-self; if form were self, then form would not lead to suffering and it should obtain regarding form: 'May my form be thus, may my form not be thus'; and indeed, O monks, since form is not-self, t...

Re: Advaitin vs. Buddhist takes on awareness/reality
Judai, “… to be brutally honest …”, you haven’t the fund of knowledge to engage in these discussions. I tend to agree. To date, we haven't seen any textual support for Judai's bold knowledge claims. In the immortal words of Christopher Hitchens - An assertion made without evidence can be dismissed ...

Re: Advaitin vs. Buddhist takes on awareness/reality
Judai, “… to be brutally honest …”, you haven’t the fund of knowledge to engage in these discussions. ad hominem attacks doesnt change the fact the Buddha said non self is suffering. It is not an ad hom. It is a very blunt statement of fact. no its ad hominem. you neglect the fact that his statemen...

Re: On Thanissaro Bhikkhu's anatta teachings
The Buddha says that whatever is self does does not lead to suffering. The Buddha also said that whatever is non self leads to suffering. Hmm. “Bhikkhus, you may well cling to that doctrine of self that would not arouse sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair in one who clings to it. But do y...

Re: On Thanissaro Bhikkhu's anatta teachings
Atta = soul = self Anatta= not-self = no-self It takes a self to declare there's no self. The Buddha used his self to declare the things that are not self. He knew taht declaring there is no self would be absurd. Where is this self 'you' talk about? What does it consist of? Where did the Buddha say...

Re: Advaitin vs. Buddhist takes on awareness/reality
. . . You did not address my point. I don't care what the "sects' say, but I do care about what carefully done scholarship points to. Tatahagatgarbha sutras are quite late in terms of Buddhism in India, certainly postdating them by a very long time in comparison to the Nikayas/Agamas. I'll be ...

Re: Advaitin vs. Buddhist takes on awareness/reality
Did you read the Thanissaro Bhikkhu article ? He is one of the translators of the Pali Canon suttas. translating pali suttas doesn't change the fact the oldest carbon dated Buddhist texts are Buddha nature sutras and the Anguttara Nikaya (along with some other pali suttas and Mahayana sutra mixture...
