Re: Ethics
Kamma works outside the guidelines of a government's laws. Take a look at this excellent post by Ven. Gavesako: I listened to a talk between Ajahn Chah and a group of visitors headed by Sanya Dharmasakti (Chief Privy Councillor). Ajahn Chah was talking about the principle of kamma. Then one of the ...

Ethics
Right Action. This is in all reality a rather sticky concept. Different cultures and societys will shape peoples view on this because of different circumstances. In 1 country, giving money to a beggar may be regarded as a noble things, as you are helping them out. Here in the US, many times your han...

Re: U.S. to deport Thai monk for being "remunerated"
No human being is illegal. But it is illegal for people to be in certain places govern they should not be. It's the immigrants coming to America and taking those jobs away that American born citizens love to do, such as: Waiting at the side of the freeways to sell pottery Waiting at the side of the...

Re: U.S. to deport Thai monk for being "remunerated"
I guess you don't follow your history very much. You're mistaken in your assessment of how closely I follow history. In your post, you erroneously repeated a falsehood we often hear from right-wingers, namely, that amnesty is at hand again now. You said, "are being given." That's just pla...

Re: U.S. to deport Thai monk for being "remunerated"
What's really sad is that they want to deport this guy, but millions of illegals here from Mexico are being given a free pass to citizenship. I really wish our government would figure out just what it does want to do. I object to this statement because it is not true. There is no free pass to U.S. ...

Re: Chat room
Finding a way to make an irc chat instead might be better. It allows people to join form an irc client if they wish rather than having to use a browser based on. I know mibbit has easy ways to incorporate their client into a site. Just a suggestion.

Re: Taking refuge
Greetings Rosuto, I am due to take refuge at a Chan center on 12 July. If I take refuge with 1 tradition, must it be redone if I decide to study with a new tradition, in the manner that they do it? A Ch'an centre is also likely to get you to take bodhisattva precepts, which might no longer sit well...

Anyone practice in NYC?
I live on the Queens/Brooklyn border in Ridgewood. I am looking for somewhere that I can go and learn some about Theravada, that isn't that long of a travel. Anyone else in NYC that can shine some light on some places.

Differences from Mahayana
I looked through this forum, and didn't see anything like this here, so thought I would ask. What are some of the key differences between Theravada and Mahayana? For instance, one that I actually know of is that Theravada believes that one brings about their own enlightenment, rather than depending ...

So, I'm new here....
MY name is Gary. I have studied the various Chinese and Japanese "flavors" of Buddhism, and am now looking to learn more of the Therevadin bent, to see which way my feet should fall.
