The birth of the noting technique

Just wondering if any one knows if the noting technique used in the Mahasi tradition was invented by the Mahasi Sayadaw or was it something passed down through lineage? I don't see anything else like it in any other tradition. Mantra meditation seems to be the only other that also uses words in its ...

Re: The birth of the noting technique

Thanks Tilt, great audio from Kearney.. He goes into vipassana and Mahasi pretty well, but I don't know if he goes too far into the history of the noting technique.. Which is fine, I was just curious thats all.
thanks again

Much thanks to everyone for your time and replies. I will be looking into the book Dmytro. And Mike gives a nice way of seeing it in the suttas.

Re: New Book on Mindfulness by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Yes. Yuttadhammo believes in there being no judgments placed upon the objects(thoughts). He talks about "pure awareness". I don't believe so.. VY stated: "Generally translated as “mindfulness”, it is usually taken to mean “awareness” or “alertness”, both of which are ostensibly posit...

Re: New Book on Mindfulness by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

VY stated So, sati would be better translated as “recognition”, and this is how it has been referred to throughout this chapter. It is deliberate and sustained recognition that in turn allows us to see the objects of experience as they truly are. I believe you are saying the same thing. When VY is t...

Re: New Book on Mindfulness by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

After reading the Venerable's book and also reading other writings he has done, I don't think what he is talking about is going against their (Joseph G and Bhante G) actual way of practicing. Thanissaro critiques the way they express what mindfulness is, or maybe their definition of mindfulness, but...

Here is a link that might be of interest... It sheds some light of what VT is saying but in a more vipassana friendly way.

Re: New Book on Mindfulness by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Here is the Venerable Yuttadhammo's position on mindfulness. Bhante Yuttadhammo is of the Mahasi Sayadaw's lineage (as is Goldstein) An excerpt: "The first step in our progress, the first factor of enlightenment, is called “sati”. “sati” is a word that should be familiar to most Buddhists; unfo...

Re: Bhikkhu Thanissaro and other scholars on Mahasi

Has Thanissaro ever commented on Mahasi Sayadaw? He has a few of his writings on his website http://www.accesstoinsight.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I would find it odd that he would have his publications on his site if he didn't hold the Ven Mahasi in some kind of honorable r...

Re: Bhikkhu Thanissaro and other scholars on Mahasi

"Access to Insight" isn't Ven Thanissaro's website, it is John Bullitt's website: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/faq.html#whatis" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Of course, it does have a lot of Ven Thanissaro's material, but also a lot of BPS and other material. :anjali: Mi...

Re: Bhante Bodhidhamma talks

yes... I do like the way he talks about the satipatthana sutta in the last talk (samatha/vipassana), although it is a bit lengthy (about an hr).. It kinda gives a thoughtful view on how both modern practices (samatha and vipassana) are in line with the Buddha's teaching and that either way or practi...

Re: Selling medicine marijuana, is it violate the 5th precept

I believe it is going against the 5th precept. Marijuana is an intoxicant that effects the brain. This is against the precept regardless of what medical benefits it has or could have. Attachment to life and/or aversion to physical pain, imo, causes the most suffering in the world today. One shouldn'...

Re: Selling medicine marijuana, is it violate the 5th precept

i'm sorry but i must disagree with you strongly. you speak like someone who has never been in severe pain that wont let up... even the Buddha laid down when his back hurt. many medicines, even ones that arent used for pain, can become intoxicating at higher doses... even simple cooking spices can b...

Re: Selling medicine marijuana, is it violate the 5th precept

as already pointed out, Marajuana was allowed by the Buddha for Rheumatoid pain. and the Buddha advises us to look after this body & to keep healthy. Where did the buddha talk about marijuana? with metta it is within the vinaya! as already mentioned in the thread here http://www.dhammawheel.com...
