Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
This is how the 'not self' slowly turned into a 'no self' and the rebirth-concept finally creeped in. Also because those people no longer really understood his subtle point of 'not denying that it is there, just denying that this leads to mokṣa'. But just speculation here, don't take it too serious...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
If one has studied Buddhism for forty years, is it possible to hold no views on rebirth? Someone new to the Dhamma might be expected to have no views about something he or she has never even thought about, but clearly you have read many books on Buddhism and listened to numerous Dhamma talks. The B...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
One cannot infer from the story of the Weaver's daughter that a belief in rebirth is not necessary to gain Stream-winning. One can only infer that direct knowledge of previous lives is unnecessary. Could you please confirm that what you are saying here is - that it is not necessary to have previous...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
Do you think the Buddha would bother to teach things that were NOT required to remove self view and other defilement's? But the fact is that the Buddha did "bother" to teach literal rebirth in so many suttas. From the logic above, that means a provisional belief in rebirth must play an im...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
Yet he does say in a somewhat authoritative formulation something along the lines of 'many monks have got an incorrect understanding of rebirth and assume it spreads over several lives'. Can this really just be his personal opinion? He certainly doesn't make it sound like that. He says that he coul...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
I’m not putting him forward as a Buddha or anything like that, especially as I have never met him. I didn't assume you were doing this, I'm just giving my account of personally spending time with him. But his book oozes with enthusiasm for attaining knowledge of the three marks – how bad is that? L...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
Hi thepea, I don't think his teachings are in line with true Buddhism, some people might think otherwise of course. I don't think his teachings and lifestyle are in line with Theravaden Buddhism, from what I witnessed I believe he would be declared defeated as a monk. As far as true Buddhism, I can...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
Having attained a stage of nibbana, that stays and has a considerable lasting effect on mind and body. Jhanas are very impermanent. So, actually you are saying that nibbana is like jhana, only a permanent form, right? I think we are getting down to knit picking here, rather more trying a form of in...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
You mention the page numbers but not the name of the book! Nibana is not a state of mind. its whats left after the defilement's are dealt with. An Inquiring Mind's Journey, Bhante Kovida The book your link is pointing to. If Nibbana would just be what is left when there are no defilements, then the...

Re: Core teaching of the Buddha
It is completely the opposite. If there is rebirth, it is therefore important to develop the path as to reach Nibbāna in this life or the next. If there is no rebirth, what is the point of reaching Nibbāna, other than to feel really blissful? Well I'll go to the pub and have a pint and do it in my ...
