I have a question concerning bowing to monks

My question is when giving salutations to a monk are you supposed to bow with an Anjali, give an Anjali and not bow, or is either one acceptable?

I have a question regarding IQ and mental stability

Can an enlightened being be stupid? What I'm trying to say is it possible for a stupid person to reach Nirvana in the lifetime in which he or she is stupid? :buddha1: Also, if an enlightened being is taking psychiatric medicine, is that person really considered enlightened? After all that person is ...

Re: Why do Thai monks smoke?

As for the monks who smoke they probably do it to get rid of the pain that techonology is always growing and the people who create the technology have no problem with crushing them with it if they want to. This statement can be argued so actually to put it in more reasonable terms I think the monks...

Re: Why do Thai monks smoke?

This is an interesting discussion to me. Out of all the monks that I have come across in the city I live in [Philadelphia PA], I have seen one monk smoking out of about 20 monks. I thought he was one out of many, but after reading this thread I realized he is not the only monk who smokes. I smoke my...

Re: Is there a real world out there?...

Is this thread based on are there other worlds out there? If so yes, for example mars. If this thread is based on do we exist and do other planets we know are out there exist that's right up there with when did time begin. The dali lama says we exist and don't exist at the same time. I guess there a...

Re: Buddha Statues: Hairstyle?

This topic intrigued me too when I first read about it. But the Buddha it is well know cut off some of his hair after he left his luxurious palace/home. And now that he is a Buddha he has a crown of hair which is one of the marks of a great being. :buddha2: :anjali:

Re: the most popular Sutta

I'd guess: Ratana Sutta - Sn 2.1 paritta (protective) sutta, often chanted; for those coming to Buddhism with a more faith emphasis Kalama Sutta - AN 3.65 for those coming to Buddhism with a more inquisitive, skeptical mind Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta - DN 22 for those coming to Buddhism from / with a m...

the most popular Sutta

What is the most popular Sutta? I say it has to be the "What the teaching is not" Sutta, the very first Sutta of the Long discourses Nikaya, for example Mathew is the first part of the Gospel out of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. So, it's no surprise that it's the most popular part of the G...

Re: Scripture that is well known to those raised Buddhist

interestingly enough if you ever heard of the phrase "one hand washes the other" I heard it in the movie Malcom X, that phrase is in the 4th Sutta of the Long Discourses Nikaya, which I read I couple days ago, I think, for the first time. I think it's something like the Suddhanna Sutta. I ...

Re: How do I stop wanting attention & acknowledgment?

First of all I might be the only one saying this but positive attention and acknowledgement can be a good thing. Those two things give people the will to live, for example doing a great deed or helping out a friend or even being good at something like bowling or chess. Second of all I don't believe ...

Re: Etiquette & How to Address a Monk

Thanks for letting me know to address a monk as Bhante. An interesting story, I brought a friend to a Buddhist Temple. And after we both got done bowing to the Buddha a monk came out and my friend started talking to the monk about a dream he had or visions he had or something like that. After the mo...

Re: Purification of Mind

Perhaps the entire eightfold path is purification of mind. Morality leads to concentration leads to wisdom which is another term for purity. Sorry that I left this thread hanging for about a year. But recently I took out the long discourses Nikaya and here I am. To tell you the truth to say that ju...
