Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Yeah, I think that the discomfort we feel when an organization like this doesn't openly lash out at those who criticize them comes from our own conflict-loving nature. As you become more and more steadied mentally and assured of the results of your teachings, you don't feel the need to fight back a...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Greetings Brizzy, Mind crushing mind... I don't what Goenka retreat(s) you went on Brizzy, but "mind crushing mind" bears no resemblance to either the video instruction, or personal instruction that I received whilst on a Goenka retreat. Metta, Retro. :) I view mind crushing mind as forci...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Think of it more that the mind & body having been crushed for 10 days via asceticism is freed. It's not asceticism. People are allowed to eat twice a day (new students even three times a day; many monks only eat once a day). Asceticism would be to eat nothing a whole day. People are allowed to ...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Hello Brizzy, I think one of the problems stems from the fact that any defence of Goenka tends to come from his disciples and not the man himself or his organisation. Isn't it true for almost all disciples and organisations? And I don't think it's a problem. The smiles one sees on day 11 are indeed...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Greetings, The smiles one sees on day 11 are indeed the smiles of relief as of a prisoner released (IMO). Yes, I'm sure the remaining defilements breathe a huge sigh of relief once it's over. Metta, Retro. :) Think of it more that the mind & body having been crushed for 10 days via asceticism i...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Hi Delf7, I think one of the problems stems from the fact that any defence of Goenka tends to come from his disciples and not the man himself or his organisation. Mr Goenka's organisation is a closed book that refuses to engage with other traditions or directly engage with accusations made against t...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat
Hi Delf7, It is a courageous decision to do what you feel is right despite group pressure and condescension from authority. People may say that the problems that arose are part of the path, this is an issue for you alone to determine. I personally think that retreats and indeed the path should be a ...

Re: Objection to the Views of Venerable Analayo
While the commentators do not always get it right, I would look to them first before I would look to someone who does not read Pali, whose meditation experience is limited, etc. . Who is this person? When did the reading of Pali become a requisite for following the 8 fold path? As for the vipassana...

Re: Samadhi (best English translation?)
I too find concentration to be a poor translation for samadhi . My meditation teacher, Sayadaw U Tejaniya, prefers stability or stability of mind . In terms of meaning, I think it’s really good as it makes sense in terms of practice—much better than concentration . However, I wasn’t satisfied. I se...

Re: Satipatthana: The direct path to realization
.....From the short paragraph on the topic starting on the bottom of page 64 and culminating at the end of the chapter (for those with the book), here is how I interpret Analayo's position. He is unequivocal that sati and samadhi are two distinct mental qualities. Otherwise, why even differentiate ...

Re: Satipatthana: The direct path to realization
Here is a short 7 minute talk from Bhante Gunaratana that may be of interest: Why do some teachers warn about practicing jhana? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41NpmB2le3I" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; :anjali: Good talk, but then I think Bhante Gunaratana is awesome. Espe...

Re: Satipatthana: The direct path to realization
I know one or two traditions that do indeed reject right jhana, they do this by their vocal warnings of the 'dangers' and the unnecessariness of jhana and their redefinition of what the Buddha considered 'right' and what they consider nearly right 'access to rightness'. I think it is a strange situ...

Re: Satipatthana: The direct path to realization
Let me add a further coimment to this: The view that jhana is not an integral part of the path to liberating insight is half right, simply because these statements are founded upon a wrong view of jhana. Right jhana is part of the path. We cannot cherry pick parts of the path just to suit our selve...
