Re: In what do you work? How do you spend your money?

I have recently been helping people create websites. The work actually ends up taking wildly different forms -- it's a lot of listening to people and their stories on what they want their life and/or business to look like, so in this way it resembles a life/business coach. People tend to open up abo...

Re: Any suttas or resources on developing humility?

Service, prostration, being around masters all helps. Ultimately, not trying to be humbled is probably the best way. Just observe the sense of a person trying to be humble and realize it's just an idea. Smile and laugh (internally or externally) at the sense of a self when it arises. Reality is what...

Re: Living among fools

Practicing compassion helps. If we understand all judgments to be simply perceptions coloring reality, we can soften around them instead of taking them to be real and permanent. We all have aspects of the fool within ourselves so it's beneficial to be kind and compassionate to seemingly outside obje...

Re: Traveling to Nepal/india: seeking recommendations, tips, tricks

Both India and Nepal are large countries with a vast number of Buddhist temples so it is difficult to know where to start. But since you mentioned Ladakh, in addition to the must-see Tibetan temples on the tourist maps, I suggest you visit MIMC. https://www.facebook.com/MIMCladakh/?hc_ref=PAGES_TIM...

Re: Traveling to Nepal/india: seeking recommendations, tips, tricks

Ooh what an exciting time! You Americans can get 10 year visas to India? I would move there immediately if I had that kind of visa, but unfortunately I can only get a 6 month visa and have to leave the country every 90 days. Enjoy! Nepal is friendlier than India, and there are a lot of fascinating ...

Traveling to Nepal/india: seeking recommendations, tips, tricks

Hi Everyone, After a recent retreat, I was reminded how essential Dhamma and Sangha are to being a happy human being. I'm flying into Kathmandu, Nepal on the 27th of May. Have loose plans to get an Indian visa, spend some time visiting monasteries and temples in the area. In India, I'd like to live ...

Re: Find the Buddha within yourself.

Yes sincerity is beautiful. Here are some qualities I look for teachers and in people in general: lightheartedness, humility, brightness, softness, gentleness. Everyone needs different teachers at different times. Some of us are too lazy and soft and we need more of a disciplinarian or warrior teach...

Re: Find the Buddha within yourself.

I think it's important to realize all these subtle imperfections we see are projections of the mind. All our teachers are human beings with conditioned minds and bodies. Perfectionism is a disease that compels us to judge instead of to love. This is not to say every teacher is great or teaches perfe...

Re: How do you spend your time? What kind of work do you do?

I work in the rail industry, not a rewarding career but pays bills for now. In my free time, I meditate, read Buddhist books, mountain and road cycling, hiking and enjoy knife collecting. I don't really have any close friends but most people I know are not into Buddhism. I am a lone wolf in that re...

Re: How do you spend your time? What kind of work do you do?

It can feel lonely, yes. I don't live near a practice-compatible monastery but I do find friends/spiritual seekers within a local Unitarian Universalist church. There is an international subgroup of Buddhists within the UU but there are no sanghas near me. What kind of work do you do? I was a part-...
