Re: Sexual misconduct and prostitute

Isn't a large part of why there is the goal to refrain from sexual misconduct to refrain from the power of that attachment/addiction? Obviously sexuality can result in harm ranging from hurt feelings to physical harm, which is one aspect of it, but on the subtle level we are refraining from jumping ...

Walking out of a burning house

Looking for some fresh perspective to a long conversation I had with my brother. The starter was...

If you have relinquished any attachments to the physical body and/or physical world, and your house catches on fire while you are inside, do you walk out of it? Why or why not?

Non-attachment and social issues

Hello! Just looking for some perspective here... I've been practicing for many years and don't often find myself riled up by social issues. If I see someone being beaten right in front of me, of course I will do what I can to stop that from happening. But I don't find myself motivated to start ralli...

Re: There is no fire like lust

Wow thank you all so much! This is tremendous. To respond to a few things: ~ The last posting about the drug addiction cycle is spot on. This is exactly what happens to me. Of course, I never consciously think "Well I really wanted to cease sexual activity, but the only real way for me to do th...

There is no fire like lust

I've heard many many different approaches for overcoming/understanding sexuality, but my mind always finds a loop hole somewhere. When I'm feeling "true", for lack of a better word, or maybe "authentic", then I don't want any involvement with relationships or sexuality. I feel ve...

Re: The Quotable Thanissaro

As for your physical eating habits, this is one of the areas where inner strength training and outer strength training part ways. As a meditator, you have to be concerned less with what physical food you eat than with why you eat. If you're bulking up for no real purpose, it's actually harmful for ...

Re: Self-cherishing

This is a wonderful topic! The "self" cannot being fully controlled, so therefore it is not "yours". What is being cherished is the idea of a self at its best. We cherish the idea of what we wish we always could be. We do not cherish the idea of a self at its worst. Self "at...

Re: To those who have ordained or plan to ordain

While California does have deserts (Death Valley for one), Wat Metta is located in an avocado orchard in semi-rural Southern Cal... Yes, and it's wonderful there! I visited this last april, and do think I would enjoy it there. I did have an inkling of a thought that I would ordain there one day... ...

Re: To those who have ordained or plan to ordain

What is currently holding you back from ordaining? How long have you been practicing Buddhism? How old are you (not really relevant, just curious)? Do you have a particular place you would like to ordain? If so, where, and why there? When do you hope to ordain? 1. - Debt, family, pets, and a lack of...

Hello from Virginia

Hello to all! My name is Mathew, and in looking through some of the topics being discussed here I'm thrilled about looking through them more, and in having the ability to ask questions pertaining to modern day situations that I may not be able to find relevant answers to in texts. I have been practi...
