This has gotten a lot easier for me over time. Have you recently given it up?

Re: Poll: the most difficult precept for you?

I have carpenter ants in my house and they're eating the wood in the walls. Been going on for years and feel like I need an exterminator. So the killing precept has been difficult for me.

Under the table

What are your thoughts on paying people under the table for work? Typically when you do this the other person receiving the money is doing it to avoid claiming taxes and you usually get a discount on the work from paying straight cash. Just wondering if you think this break precepts in any way or sh...

Re: CBD Oil

In the UK, it's the latest snake oil. Its fans claim it can cure anything, from fatigue, to impotence, to high blood pressure, to Alzheimer's, to epilepsy... you name it, there are claims this ' wonder drug ' can cure it. Now available everywhere that nicotine-infused products are available (probab...

CBD Oil

What are your thoughts on CBD oil? Do you think taking it violates any precepts. Apparently it does not get you high like THC. It’s a relaxant. I’m curious to try it but not sure if it’s appropriate for a Buddhist.

Re: Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright

I’m listening to the audio book now. It’s read by someone called Fred Sanders. I get the complaints about his voice but it didn’t turn me off enough to not listen. The book comes across as reflections of someone learning Buddhism for the first time. It’s not really “proving” that Buddhism is true. I...

I’d suggest weightlifting. Muscle > Fat

Slowly cut out bad food too...before it’s too late

OMG! I stopped this book and switched to one from sakyong mipham. Today I find out he was accused of sexual assault too. Geez!

I had no idea he made those claims. The more I looked into him now the more red flags you see...like charging lots of money.

Re: Culadasa : An annoucement from Dharma Board

Sorry to revive this thread, but I just started listening to his audio book The Illuminated Mind and was really getting into it...then I discover this about him and I obviously don’t want to finish the book now. It’s so damaging when Dharma teachers do stuff like this. It destroys people’s faith. I ...

Re: Moha, lobha & dosa and work

Monks are held to much higher standards though. I mean, we have to follow 5 precepts vs all the rules a monk has to follow. So it’s not like a 1:1 comparison. That’s why I don’t think it’s that hard to believe those rules were more directed towards monks and their requisites.

Re: Moha, lobha & dosa and work

But I am reminded of MN 117 where it is also said: "what is wrong livelihood? Scheming, persuading, hinting, belittling, & pursuing gain with gain. This is wrong livelihood." MN 117 seems to describe the dilemma I face in my own lay life today. Pretty much all business today - even on...

Re: Moha, lobha & dosa and work

In terms of work, the company is paying you so I think it's important to do your job well. Otherwise, you might get fired or you'll be the first to get laid off if they need to cut people. Are all businesses unskillful? I mean, people need to make a living and feed their families, etc. As long as yo...

Re: Is this wrong perception?

I hope you are following Buddha's teaching. Why do you think Buddha wore discarded clothes patched together to form a piece of garment? Garlic makes you want sex all the time. Look at the french they eat a lot of garlic and they walking around with hard on. Yes, it's true, just ask them. I am just ...
