Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
Do you know much about what was taking place doctrinally on the mainland? Anyone? I'd like to understand more in-depth the relation to the Buddha's teaching here.

See http://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6759&p=107867#p107860" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I found the book and managed look into these pages. I see, that's very helpful. I didn't know that Buddhaghosa claimed the chiliocosm, dichiliocosm, and trichilioco...

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
Surely not "son of Dhamma"? That isn't a very constructive thing to say about someone.

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
Paññāsikhara, thanks very much for helping me to understand that the Mahayana didn't invent these concepts. I am convinced however that they do impose them and that these concepts are an imposition on the Buddha's teaching, because I haven't found any references to them. You're talking much about th...

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
Maybe I said that I wasn't well-read in the Theravada commentaries. Visuddhimagga isn't a commentary?tiltbillings wrote:Maybe you are not so well read. Try the Visuddhimagga XIII, 31 (pgs 455-6 in Nanamoli's translation).

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
In the Visuddhimagga, the Apadana, and Theragatha too. The sense is different from that of later developed Mahayana thought, but let's be honest enough to admit that such general terms are there, at least. Especially no definition or qualification of what "buddha-fields" are "Mahayan...

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
Thus, it is quite incorrect to claim that "it is a Mahayana imposition", for it most certainly is not. And in fact, by so claiming, you have further confused the issue. Moreover, the so-called Diamond sutra merely mentions these systems, but does not "explain" them at all. It do...

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
Actually, the three knowledges are quite bare boned. There is very little of what is worked in detail in the OP in the three knowledges, and that stuff really is not needed for awakening. No, it isn't needed for awakening at all. An Arahant doesn't necessarily understand the structure of the cosmos...

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
I'm not quite sure in what way beings in formless realms get to "see" other beings pass away, not having any of the 5 senses. I'm asking this not to find fault with your statement, but because I'm actually wondering how can they experience the other beings in other realms without the sens...

Re: World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
In response to a limited number of requests, and also the absence of a basic discussion of world-cycles and cosmic systems according to the Buddhadhamma, I've been urged to create this post to incline a general discussion on these matters. Hi son of dhamma (dhammaputto?), Interesting. Don't know mu...

World Cycles and Cosmic Systems
In response to a limited number of requests, and also the absence of a basic discussion of world-cycles and cosmic systems according to the Buddhadhamma, I've been urged to create this post to incline a general discussion on these matters. A single world-system is constituted by a grouping of beings...

Re: Human reborn as Human
What systems are we discussing, now? If the same thing can be said then I want a comparison and contrast between this field of study and these Hindu and Mahayanist "systems". Please, if you would.

Re: Human reborn as Human
My point has been that an application of the scientific method to any particular study should be called "science". At least, that is my purpose for the word. I explained that the resulting data can only be interpreted in the terms of this field of study and so amongst other members of this...

Re: Human reborn as Human
If you want to see it-- AS I HAVE SAID FROM THE GET-GO --then you'll have to approach the field of study on your own... (with attentive inquisition, logic, skepticism, and scientific methodology in experimentation). You know? Explore the world a little. You just need to be open, skeptical, and roote...
