Re: Everyday practice

Thanks everyone for your comments :) I got a copy of Analayo book. I tried meditating 20 minutes in the past and was worse than 10 minutes  not to mention that I didn't everyday, but two days a week. Apart from meditation and following the 5 precepts, are there other practices like chanting or...

Re: understanding anatta with evolution?

Buddhism explains that there is no "I" to be found anywhere, Anatta. With regards to reincarnation, you can think of some type of object or consciousness that jumps from body to body as one dies and is reborn. However, even there not an "I" is to be found. Try to find an "I&...

Re: Is snuff an intoxicant?

If you are wondering if using snuff is breaking the 5 precept for Lay practitioners, the answer is yes. Snuff is an intoxicant.

Is it a large bad karma? No. But I would make an effort to ween yourself off o it.

Re: a better way to learn

Are there levels of being a monk somewhere between formal full-time residency and lay practitioner? The only thing different from practicing at a Meditation Center and practicing at your house is the strength of the vibration. You can practice just as intensely at your home. I know many lay practit...

Re: Namaste

Welcome Barbara, that is great that you have informally been practicing Buddhism throughout your life and that you are practicing with more conviction now. If you are serious about Buddhism I suggest taking a meditation retreat. Books and teachers are nice but the only real way to travel down the pa...

Re: Does euanimity means that youre not overweening?

Asking a lot of questions is fine, but know it is not very helpful. Do instead of ask. Meditation is everything. It and only it, is how you travel down the path. You do not need suttas, or teachers, or jhanas, everything you need will come out of the meditation naturally. It is like asking questions...

Re: How to Cope without Sensual Indulgence

You do not need to sever your ties with sense pleasure! Monks are ascetic like to super speed up the process along the path. We are layfolk and there is nothing wrong with sense pleasures, just keep them in balance. You can still without a doubt, reach enlightenment, and still enjoy sense pleasures....

Re: The last eschelons of Metta.

So how are you meant to be kind and loving to those who are so obviously encroaching on and treading on your whole world, your whole society, your whole people, your whole life, when it feels as if the knife that is killing everything you hold most dear is already on its way through your chest and ...

Re: Mindful of 4 foundations or breath/Buddho during daily life?

Well said Bodom. I seem to be partial to body sensation. It is so tangible and easy to be aware of at all times. A couple years ago I started the effort to be with it at all times and it has brought great results (an understatement). In fact some might say it is all you need :) "What the Buddha...
