Re: Imperfect morality and sotapanna

But the stream enterer, because of his/her intuitive understanding of karma, will immediately realize the pain that is caused by immorality, so he/she is less likely to do immoral things. These are my opinions. That sounds true :anjali: I only took issue with 'break all morality' because there are ...

Re: Imperfect morality and sotapanna

I don't know, but I think in my opinion probably but its wisely not something the Buddha mentioned. How would it be to say, yes these stream enterers can break all morality because they are destined to end karma and be free. That doesn't look good publicly. Hi, wouldn't it be the case, that anyone ...

Re: LIke a moth to a flame, again; a difficult sutta. Can somone help?

Hi, I just need to tie up a loose end: I had said "I will reply to the other posts later", but on second thoughts, I don't have much to add at this time. I'm not stressed out about not fully understanding it all anymore, in any case, so, rather than drag the topic out any further, I will s...

Re: Which of these versions of SN 22.59 have correct grammar?

A scholar might be able to finally clear it up, I would expect there are a few pali experts here. Yes. Venerable Dhammanando or Volo. It appears vedanaṃ can only be accusative; therefore does this make sense? In any case, I learned a bit reading over the conversation between yourself and pu...

Re: equanimity for non-mask wearers (personal experience)

My housemates are scared of 'the virus' (meme, psyop, whatever) so I promised to wear a muzzle (ie, face mask) when I go into shops. I was yelled at by my landlady for not being a believer. I'm going along with this bs out of concern for my landlady's state of mind (she really is scared and I want t...

Re: Which of these versions of SN 22.59 have correct grammar?

I take it to be in the genitive singular. It appears it might be locative (which sounds strange to me) because the rupa, sankhara & viññāṇa in the same context are rūpe, saṅkhāresu & viññāṇe; which all only share locative case. I had the expectation, that Access to Insight's version...

Which of these versions of SN 22.59 have correct grammar?

Am learning this sutta in the pali, however I note differences in versions. Does anyone know which is correct, or where we can find definitively grammatically correct pali texts? For example Version 1: Vedanā anattā. Vedanā ca h·idaṃ, bhikkhave, attā abhavissa, na·y·idaṃ vedanā ābādhāya saṃvatteyya,...

Re: Good and bad

OK, thanks for your replies. What about hatred of evil? And greed for more dhamma and nibbana? And how do you distinguish between greed and need? If everyone who acts out of desire commits a bad act, doesn't this mean essentially everyone will end up in a bad destination? In the normal course of ev...

Re: LIke a moth to a flame, again; a difficult sutta. Can somone help?

From where I currently stand, on this side of the river, so to speak - I don't understand this. Has the Buddha relinquished delight in anything at all, even Unbinding? How is that happiness, to not enjoy anything at all, not even release? Which in other places, he says is 'the Highest happiness&quo...

Re: Can we use Breath Meditation When It’s Hard to Breathe?

In my experience, yes. Quite a few years ago, I had received an injury which resulted in having a broken rib which had puncutured my spleen . I was bleeding internally, and my ablility to breathe had diminished to just a little movement, due to the pain. Also I did not want to rupture the spleen eve...

Re: LIke a moth to a flame, again; a difficult sutta. Can somone help?

AN 10.58 indicates that delight and desire are synonymous 'All phenomena are rooted in desire'. In other suttas arahants are heard saying nibbana is delightful, and others smile in contemplating attainment. I read in a few places, some, upon attaining final release, 'sang paens of joy' while walkin...

Re: LIke a moth to a flame, again; a difficult sutta. Can somone help?

Now once more, I want to confront a phrase that disturbs me. Clearly, there's still a hole in my tooth, so to speak, in terms of understanding. "delight is the root of suffering". Well. Finally - after many years - I've come around to being able to 'delight in the Buddha's words". Do...

LIke a moth to a flame, again; a difficult sutta. Can somone help?

Hello all. I've come a long way over the years (when you consider I was a god-seeking Eternalist when I first arrived, who was nevertheless attracted to the deep wisdom of the Buddha, and how his doctrine made more sense than the often dogmatic, fundamentalist rantings of Theistic religions, even my...

'six habits without abandoning which it is not possible to practice the satipaṭṭhānas properly'

This is so helpful for anyone on the Path of satipatthana / jhana practice, I decided to post it here. The current situation (socially) actually lends itself to practising more intensively, judging by what is said here. Cha, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo ajjhattaṃ kāye kāy-anupassī viharituṃ. T...
