Agreed....it's not even really a matter of daily enjoyment...more a matter of personal hygiene ....Jhana4 wrote:I don't know. When I think of the attachments that cause the most misery in life or things that give people a big head, enjoying a daily shower usually doesn't make it on the list.

Re: Are monks allowed to take a warm shower?
57. Should any bhikkhu bathe at intervals of less than half a month, except at the proper occasions, it is to be confessed. Here the proper occasions are these: the last month and a half of the hot season, the first month of the rains, these two and a half months being a time of heat, a time of feve...

Re: the great rebirth debate
More than two thousand years have gone by and there is still no consensus about (post-mortem) rebirth. I think it is a mistake to talk about this as if it is something that Buddhists have been arguing about for over two thousand years. The lack of consensus about rebirth would seem to be a recent a...

Re: Giving the precepts
I'm asking about the 5 precepts....I don't know if they do this in other lineages, but there is a whole formula in Pali for taking the precepts that we use (our teacher is a bhikkhu in a Burmese lineage) and it involves asking the bhikkhu three times to be given the 5 precepts and then being given t...

Giving the precepts
Just a quick question....can a layperson give the precepts to another layperson, or can they only be given to a layperson by a bhikkhu or bhikkhuni?

Re: Sexual Abuse in Monastic Orders and Elsewhere.
I could see how a monastic environment would be attractive to someone who has a lot of guilt regarding their sexuality, whether they be gay, a pedophile, or think themselves to be particularily perverted. Please try not to lump gays in with pedophiles or ''people (who) think themselves to be partic...

Re: Buddha Statues: Hairstyle?
The curls on his head are, I think, a misunderstanding of one of the 32 marks. It says that: the tips of his body-hairs (not head hairs) turn up; the upturned body hairs are blue-black, the colour of collyrium, curled and turned to the right.... In one Sutta in the Sutta Nipaata-the Sundarikabhaaara...

Re: Mention of Hindu Gods in Suttas
The Mahabharata is actually a very old story that predates the Buddha....I watched a documentary series not so long ago that talked about it. It said that the story is based on events that happened around about 8-900 BCE..the documentary was Micheal Woods The Story of India..part 3 I think...

Re: Mention of Hindu Gods in Suttas
I just found something interesting in the Digha Nikaya in the Mahasamaya Sutta (Sutta 20)...it mentions Vishnu, which it appears is Venhu in Pali, and it mentions Varuna but as a plural ''the Varunas''...it also mentions Garuda but also as a plural ''fierce garuda birds''..... From Wikipedia: Many o...
