Re: The Dhamma Wheel Meditation Challenge

Wishing you all the very best! :namaste: Thank you, Ben! My first week was pretty successful. I shamefully admit to missing one day this week. I beat myself up pretty bad about it, but oh well. I think challenging myself to half an hour a day was a tiny bit much, and it made me less likely to hit t...

Re: Vajrayana

I have read books in which the Dalai Lame espouses the Doctrines of the Four Noble Truths, Anatta, Annica, and Nirvana. Since these are the core tenants of Buddhism, I would consider him a Buddhist. Others may disagree, however.

Re: The Dhamma Wheel Meditation Challenge

For various reasons (school being a big one), my practice has waned lately. It has bothered me a great deal, but I was so stressed with school I could never bring myself to meditate when there was homework to be done. I need to learn to re-organize my priorities, because in the long run I actually c...

Challenge met. Given that my one-step-at-a-time method has so far been successful, I think I will continue it and renew my last challenge for this week.

Re: The Dhamma Wheel Meditation Challenge

Greetings Sully, I thought about keeping a meditation journal of sorts, since I can imagine that being really helpful. I'm hoping that for now this thread will serve that purpose. If there is anything else we can do to support your practice, please let me, or one of my colleagues, know. kind regard...

Re: The Dhamma Wheel Meditation Challenge

All the best with it d.sullivan! May you succeed in your noble endeavours! Thanks, Ben! Several years ago, after having given up meditation for several years, I got sick in a way that I knew meditation would help me with getting better. I decided that no matter what happened in my day, I would at l...

Re: The Dhamma Wheel Meditation Challenge

Hey everyone. I'm currently a student, and I have been having a tough time maintaining my meditation practice with my stressful and erratic schedule, and this meditation challenge is exactly what I need! Being a bit ambitious, my immediate inclination is to challenge myself to sit everyday for 45 mi...

Re: Women: more gifted for spiritual life?

Hi I wonder whether women might be more gifted than men for spiritual life. I seen 3 reasons why this would be the case: 1°) They seem more attracted to anything spiritual 2°) They seem to know their inner life and their emotions better 3°) They seem to have less sexual desire (which is not a small...

Re: An American Buddhist Tradition

The teachers a meditation centers such as IMS are not "self proclaimed," and many of them continue to work with older recognized teachers such as U Pandita. My thoughts as well. In fact, if one reads the writings of some of those teachers, one will find that they were explicitly asked by ...

Re: Science-Expansion/Contraction of the Universe?

Recent observations of the cosmic backround radiation indicate that the universe is not going to have a "Big Crunch," but will instead expand infinitely. In fact, astronomers are pretty certain that not only are we expanding indefinitely, but that the rate at which the universe is expandi...

Hi, > Recent observations of the cosmic backround radiation indicate that the universe is not going to have a "Big Crunch,"....< Not really. According to my astronomy professor, the consensus among astronomers today, given the current evidence (like observations of 1a supernova) is that t...

Re: Alan Wallace on Modern Vipassana

I think Alan Wallace may have in mind Jon Kabat-Zinn, who has divorced vipassana from its Buddhist context and does say things like, "Watch what arises and don't judge it" (See, e.g., his book Wherever You Go, There You Are for words to this effect). JKZ is primarily interested in vipassa...

Re: Alan Wallace on Modern Vipassana

Damdifino what his intentions were, but it is a choice of wording that is a problem, which is less than skillful. And it sure looks like he was attacking modern vipassana teachings, and who would that be? Oh, I don't mean to say that he isn't attacking modern vipassana teachings. He clearly is. In ...

Re: Alan Wallace on Modern Vipassana

Here is Wallace's broadside against vipassana practice: http://www.tricycle.com/a-mindful-balance" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I am not impressed. In another thread, Tiltbillings wrote this, and I wanted to respond to it without taking the thread off topic, so I'm starti...
