Re: What is this knowledge for?
In the Anguttara Nikaya, Book of Tens, Anathapindika and Vajjiyamahita, both lay followers teach the Dhamma by refuting the wrong views of a group of wanderers. At the end of the discourse, the Buddha praises Anathapindika for defending the teaching against misrepresentation. (AN 10.93) The househol...

Re: What is this knowledge for?
What is this knowledge for? I just started to think about why I am so engrossed in Buddhism. I feel that Sutta's study is mainly for monks. I just wondered whether there is much practical usage for laypeople. You say this now, after you have read all or most of the tipitaka and have over 21,000 pos...

Re: Your Dhamma Verses Here.
" Birth makes no Brahmin, nor non-Brahmin, makes; it is life's doing that mold the Brahmin true. Their lives mold farmers, tradesmen, merchants, and serfs. Their lives mold robbers, soldiers, chaplains, and kings. By birth is not one an out-caste. By birth is not one a Brahmin. By deeds is one ...

Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi is the sanest Buddhist monk on Earth
That was merely his specific example. As is pointed out above, the spurious logic he employed served as justification for almost any conflict and thus served as post-hoc justification for the war in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. He did come out with an essay condemning the ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza...

Re: Bhikkhu Bodhi is the sanest Buddhist monk on Earth
Bhikkhu Bodhi is the sanest, most reasonable Buddhist monk on Earth. Do not touch Bhikkhu Bodhi. Bad for you and your karma. He is the best explanator of Buddhism on Planet Earth. Best teachings Earth can muster. BB's teachings. After Metteyya Buddha's. So do you agree with his efforts to justify t...

Re: Self-Love or Self-Compassion
I think I probably chose the wrong word. If we don't own ourselves, then what's the point? We don't know our future, we also can't determine our future (lives). Whatever we do whether it's self compassion or as you said self hatred, at the very end we have to surrender ourselves, so to speak, to so...

Re: The vinaya should be updated
Here is the reference in the Vinaya about dwarfs and medical disabilities: Mahavagga, Khandaka 1, Chapter 71 < Previous parent: Khandaka 1 - The Admission to the Order of Bhikkhus Next > 1. At that time the Bhikkhus conferred the pabbajjā ordination on a person whose hands were cut off, on a person ...

Re: The vinaya should be updated
Height does not matter, what matters is mental purification. Bhaddiya was a dwarf, who attained enlightenment (Udana 7.1 - 7.5) http://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=Ud_7.1_Bhaddiya_Sutta It later became forbidden to ordain dwarves, however... I know, which is unfortunate. It doesn't seem to ma...

Re: Are Homosexuals allowed to ordain?
That would only be an issue if a monastery had more than one monk who was gay (in lay life). If a gay man ordains in a monastery where all of the other monks were heterosexual (in lay life) there would be no temptations between the monks. The latter is the more likely scenario.

Hedonism. Many people have tried it, especially many celebrities, actors, actresses, musicians. Many (not all) end up depressed and are still full of suffering.

Re: How do I become a nun?
I get it, but how do I go about it? Do I show up at a monastery one day and ask them to ordain me? Is it that simple or is there something else I need to do? Definitely do not just go show up and expect them to ordain you. There may be some application process or they may not even have an opening f...

Re: How do I become a nun?
I’d recommend visiting some Theravada temples and monasteries first and participating in their programs and activities and observing the nuns. And then eventually asking the nuns there some questions and see if it’s something you would want to do.
