Re: Buddhism and evolutionary theory

As I recall the basic points (I did an online course with him years ago) he says that we have evolved to survive and pass on our DNA, which doesn't require, and is often inimical to, correct knowledge about how things really are. Those creatures who fear suffering and massively over-estimate the pl...

Re: Buddhism and evolutionary theory

The more I learn and think about evolutionary theory, the more I find Buddhism to be in perfect tune with it. I see Buddhism as a way to free oneself from the stick of suffering and the carrot of pleasure (phrase correct me if I'm wrong), the two most powerful ways that have emerged from evolutiona...

No, not when there is greed. If the intention and motivation is greed, it won't happen.

I'm sure anagaarika is being sarcastic and joking.

So i suggest you to not side with those users. From my point of view. I don't know what they see me doing here from theirs pov. As I stated this is the Classical Theravada sub-forum, which has stricter rules from the other parts of the forum. For Theravada it is sabbe dhamma anattā (all things are ...

Re: Disrespecting Vipassana

The wearing away of old kamma via intensive 'meditation' practice is pretty much comparable to Jainist austerity practices. The painful (and very occasionally delightful) sensations viewed 'equanimously' are apparently burning up your old kamma. It's a form of practice that the Buddha ridiculed. Al...

Same goes to user DNS and user Ceiswir. This is the Classical Theravada section, which has strict guidelines to not argue against the core principles of Classical Theravada. In other sections of the forum it is okay to present other interpretations or engage in debate. I actually don't have a probl...

Re: Identity View

But you won't find the self or a soul in Theravada. A quote from Buddha would suffice Otherwise you are saying what Buddha never said And why are you doing that Others have already done this many, many times. No need to keep repeating it to you. Also, a reminder, this is the Classical Theravada sec...

Re: Identity View

I currently focus on Advaita. It's because I've practised both Advaita and Theravada that I understand the differences between them. You, along with another prolific poster here, want to make Theravada sound like a version of Advaita, which it clearly isn't. This is a good approach. It i...

Re: What makes Theravada conservative?

What SV said and also there is a strong adherence to monasticism in Theravada. Whereas in some Mahayana traditions, for example, some Zen traditions where the priests will have shaved heads and wear robes, but they are married and have children. Also, some Mahayana traditions have a more relaxed app...

Re: the great rebirth debate

So if there is no beginning, that means the number of beings in Samsara is finite as there are no "new" sentient beings coming in. But there are sentient beings achieving enlightenment and leaving Samsara. So that would mean the total number of beings in the planes of existence must gradu...

No, not in mainstream Christianity. You are mixing Christianity with Advaita (and no Dhamma).
