Re: "The Big Bang was not the beginning"
Chris, thank you for the link. So, it seems to me like if someone wanted to make a theory where the time doesn't move (or progress the way it usually does), this means that he is clinging to "time" as a concept. Or, in other words... he is stuck on viewing things in this way. Thank you for...

Re: "The Big Bang was not the beginning"
I apologize if any confusion was caused. I didn't intend to take anything out of context.
Speaking of context, what is the context of that sutta? I'm not having much luck finding it online and I have to admit that I'm having trouble making any sense of it in the form it is presented above.

Re: Another question... Buddhism and Evolution
That being said, I agree with Prof. Gombrich that, taking the context of DN 27 into account, this sutta is a lively and ingenious parody that was actually meant to make fun of the very need for a cosmology as a foundation for religious development. So you think this sutta (and other DN suttas about...

Re: "The Big Bang was not the beginning"
Could this be a different formulation in scientific jargon of just what the Buddha taught ~ beginningless time. Uncountable formations of the Universe, uncountable destructions. And on and on and on we go trapped in the cycle of re-becoming, through not achieving Stream-Entry - the first stage of T...

Re: MUHAMMAD (PBUH) IN BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES?
Although the author obviously put quite a bit of effort into picking and choosing quotes and comparisons, I don't think the s/he makes much of an argument. Major religions and religious figures tend to have a few things in common. Some people like to read a lot into that. I think it just says someth...

"The Big Bang was not the beginning"
Interesting interview with physicist Sean Carroll on topics such as time, entropy, and the cause of the big bang: What Is Time? One Physicist Hunts for the Ultimate Theory His hypothesis involves a multiverse with a static universe at the "middle". ...that static universe in the middle has...

Re: Buddhism and Vegetarianism.
If there is one topic guaranteed to provoke and stimulate heated and animated discussion and - frankly - bickering and occasionally self-righteous put-downs - it's the topic of vegetarianism. I don't think I've ever come across any topic in Buddhism that is as likely to do this. My suggestion - sho...

Re: according to the pali canon, what happens after you die?
you guys think a small grammatical error makes my post sound like it's talking about re-incarnation and the author agent just referenced literally used the term "re-incarnation" but no one noticed? Sorry for going a bit off topic, but just to clarify so no one gets the wrong idea that the...

Re: according to the pali canon, what happens after you die?
Hi Zac, From "How Rebirth Takes Place" (Chapter 28) of The Buddha and His Teachings by Venerable Nārada Mahāthera: Rebirth takes place immediately, irrespective of the place of birth, just as an electromagnetic wave, projected into space, is immediately reproduced in a receiving radio set....

You think that's bad, there was a place near where I used to live called the Buddha Bar. Nothing like breaking the 5th precept in front of a big Buddha statue. http://www.mozbar.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Hmm... their website even advertises a "Sensual Atmosph...

Re: Another question... Buddhism and Evolution
As a huge Dawkins fan, I don't have any problem whatsoever with evolution. I find it absolutely fascinating. However it's really only intellectually interesting. As much as I love it, there's just some things I don't feel science is able to address (at least not in it's current state). Because of th...

The man was simply brilliant. A scientific genius with an amazing ability to set his knowledge in ethical and philosophical terms. This video brings tears to my eyes, his words are so profound. The most adequate description of how hearing these words makes me feel is by saying I think that it conjur...

Re: Three Kinds of Kamma
I think it's just a way of pointing out that there has to be intent for it to be akusala kamma. The Buddha is refuting the idea espoused by certain factions at the time who said akusala kamma is created regardless of whether the act is intentional or not. If so, one plans to kill arahant but doesn't...
