Re: t shirts
I asked a monk at Wat Metta this one time.
I asked what he thought of me doing a rembrandt type painting of the buddha and he said he would never use the buddha or dhamma to make money.

Re: Lifespan of beings in the hell realm
(cross-posted from sister DW forum) The Buddha taught that time passes very slowly in the hell realm, so a living being in hell can suffer for billions and trillions of human years before taking rebirth in higher realms. Hi Zengen, What sutta is this from? My understanding of the length one would b...

Re: The Buddha only taught about Hell because...
Hi all, Another practitioner told me that he once read a discourse where the Buddha explains that He only talked about Hell because the people of the time already believed in it. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Seems too good to be true. Hi Vakkali, Here's a sutta on hell. The footnotes say tha...

Re: How to start a new monastery?
Why is there alot of land cheap in NC? chownah I'm not exactly sure. My guess: Humidity No physical characteristics creating scarcity of space, so lots of supply Heat in summer A little snow in winter Trees may make some feel claustrophobic Bugs Bible belt A little more dangerous than most states -...

Jhana monks and Dhamma-devotee monks
I thought all of the monks were jhana monks. Is studying texts considered effort? To me it seems like formal meditation time is correlated with the end of suffering, but this is an assumption. I enjoy reading the suttas more than I do meditation, but when I meditate I'm glad I did! What do you make ...

Re: Why do Thai monks smoke?
I think there is a slippery slope here. Using those standards, one could argue that the basic stimulant effect is also similar to cocaine. Addiction = craving induced Smoking is usually an addiction and is extremely difficult to break. Look at all of the people using thousands of dollars they don't...

Re: Attachment to loved ones
I struggle with this too. The suttas talk about it being the hardest bond to break. It's even harder for me, since I was raised mormon (LDS). Their beliefs are that families are together forever. If this body is not self, then their bodies are not their selves. Their bodies are subject to impermanen...

Re: The Role of Lay People in Theravāda
I must have misunderstood the 5 Precepts in Theravāda. Within monastic context, I thought the 3rd precept meant abstinence (I'm married) Here's a more detailed explanation on the 3rd precept: He does not get sexually involved with those who are protected by their mothers, their fathers, their broth...

Re: Should Buddhism reclaim the swastika?
For the west, you cannot divorce that symbol from what it meant in Germany. End of story. Only an attention-seeking idiot would try. Having use of it is not going to make or break anything whatsoever. For the east, it seems as though it is still very present and without the historical baggage. Seem...
